Are PMA systems just for stand-alone machines or can they be networked?
All the PMAS modules can be run as stand-alone or fully networked. For networked installations, we recommend that the database is located on a hospital file server with the PMAS software installed on each local machine. This reduces the amount of network traffic and gives a better response time.

How do we install PMAS?
PMAS comes on a self-install CD with full instructions. If the system is to be networked, your IT department may have to be involved to agree which file server to use and to map the required pathways. We give guidance if required.

Is any additional software required before PMA systems can be run?
No pre-loaded additional software is needed before PMAS can be run. All the required software is delivered on the installation CD. However, if reports and graphs etc are to be exported into Excel, Word, Access or PowerPoint, then Microsoft Office must also be available.

What type of databases do PMA systems use?
All PMAS modules use an xBase relational database with Microsoft FoxPro indexes. The xBase format has been around since the mid 1980s and is a well tried and proven way of storing data.

Can PMA systems link into PAS?
If the hospital PAS permits a link to be set up, PMAS can be programmed to retrieve a new patient’s demographic and GP details. The amount of work involved and the cost will depend on the PAS interface. IT’s co-operation will be needed to specify the necessary procedures.

Can data from the PMA database be exported into other formats?
Although xBase files can be exported directly to Excel and Access, due to the way that some free text fields are structured, we advise that all such processes are carried out using the various export buttons provided within PMAS.

How do we create or change the coded information held in PMAS?
In order to carry out audits and analyses, most patient data is coded. Each code has a description that is displayed for easy selection in drop-down boxes. All information with an ICD or OPCS code or comprises part of a National minimum dataset, is provided on the installation CD. Other coded information is either added at data entry time as needed, or maintained through the Housekeeping menu option <Maintain Codes>.

What backup facilities are provided?
If the PMA system is stand-alone, two menu options are available under <Security> to make a backup copy to a selected folder, and to restore from that folder if needed. Networked databases on file servers should be handled by IT’s normal backup routines.

What support and training is available?
P.A.M. Ltd offers an annual support contract covering telephone advice and giving support as needed. We keep backup copies of your PMAS software in case your system needs to be reinstalled at any time. We do not take responsibility for your database. We also offer on-site training which is chargeable.

Are PMA systems kept up-to-date with current trends?
When a new minimum dataset is released or there are developments in pathology techniques for example, with advice from long term users of PMAS, we bring out a new version incorporating these features. Everyone with a support contract is offered the upgrade at a discount.

What happens if we want to collect additional patient information not included in PMA systems?
We offer a bespoke service to develop systems exactly to your own specifications. Once you have defined your requirements, we submit a quotation for the work involved at our normal rates.
